Thoughts on Marriage -- Gay, Straight, Whatever....

You know, for years I used to read Ann Landers in the morning newspaper, and it seemed that the topic that would not die a quick death was that of the "toilet seat" (along with which way toilet paper should be placed on the dispenser.) Men left the seat up for that poor unsuspecting woman to come along and have to lower it so as to not "end up" with an unwanted bidet.

However, there has always been an easy solution to this dilemma: Keep both the seat and cover down, then no matter what, man or woman, when it was time to pinch off a good one, or let the flood gates open, each would be required to lift the cover, or cover and seat -- pretty easy, huh?

Apparently not, since this debate continues to this day.

Marriage is a lot like a toilet -- but more so than for the obvious reasons. Why should government "recognize" marriage at all? It is pretty clear to me that government should leave marriage to the synagogues, churches, temples, or whatever religious institution a person wishes to associate with and get on with bigger issues.

I believe anyone should have the right to enter into a civil union and have the legal benefit of government recognizing that union, but leave "marriage" out of government for everyone. That way, everyone is on an equal footing, just like using a toilet. If you want to "get on" or "get off", everyone gets the same treatment.

Folks, gay people have been around as long as straight people have. We are good, honest, law abiding tax payers for the most part, just like our straight counterparts. Why make me use the outhouse, when there is perfectly good plumbing indoors? Lets get on with addressing those issues that will make a difference for us all, and stop trying to create differences between us. Let's just flush, and move on.
